How to Apply a Weathered Finish to New Wood Siding

Video Length: 2:35
Produced by: John Ross and Chuck Miller

If you've got weathered-wood siding to repair or replace, you could put up fresh wood and wait for it to weather in and look natural, but there's a better way.

I'd like to attribute this tip, but it's anonymous. I heard somebody talking about this in a lumber yard on the West Coast twenty years ago. The idea was that you take baking soda, mix it with water, and paint it onto the kind of wood you would use outside--something with a lot of tannins in it. Watch the video to see if it works.

Vines & Stucco (outside) repair : Help me please

I am considering purchasing a wonderful tudor home with vines (beautiful, but daunting, I suppose) and wood trim that has been weathered by ice and water. What are the challenges in leaving the vines and/or fixing the stucco? What does one do to remedy this? Leave it? Replace wood siding? Your estimates or ideas greatly appreciated! New York State!! Removing wood shingles

I live in Marin and don't have a use for alumimium siding. I am thinking of removing it when I have new windows installed.
question: I remoived a bit of Alum siding to see what condition the siding was in. I sound fairly worn shingles but they are lapped close to 12" apart. Is this common in older homes? also if the shingles are a bit thrashed & weathered can I spot replace them and powerwash the remaining ones to make it look uniform? Or do I need to replace all to make look good(they are unpainted)just stained.
Also if I decide to leave the siding on can wood trom be used to trim the new windows or will the aluminum get too damaged to look clean after the windows are installed as an option.

Some homes will receive extensive and visible rehabilitation, including the installation of vinyl siding, roofing and windows. Other homes won't have an obvious exterior update but will have new furnaces or flooring put in.

    • You would be better-off getting a shaper with the head shapes that were recommended. Even with a router table it is hard to control the passage of the wood past the router cutters. The shaper makes it easy and keeps you from ruining a long piece of wood.
