Quality Edge InsideOut Underdeck Installation

2013-08-19 18.59.02I just finished having a drainage system added to an elevated deck at my home this week, and couldn’t be happier with the look. It’s a product called InsideOut Underdecking by Quality Edge. QE manufactures aluminum and steel construction products like siding, soffit material, and flashings.

This product uses a system of carrier channels and perimeter trim to support aluminum alloy ceiling pans beneath a wood deck. Rain water falls through the gaps between deck boards into the ceiling pans and drains to a gutter and downspout.

Typically, there would be a gutter at the outside edge and all panels would drain to it, then to a downspout and out into the yard.Side Patio ade more sense to have the main patio area where the gutter is at the outside deck beam, and at the side patio, drain to a gutter mounted on the wall of the house which then connects into an existing downspout.

The installation process starts with determining the high end and low end elevations for proper drainage. A slope of 1/8″ per foot is typical. Perimeter trim pieces are installed on 3 sides with the gutter on the low side. A carrier channel is installed at about 4′ spacing between the high and low points to help support longer spans. The carrier channel has teeth that the panels snap into and seems to hold very securely.

2013-08-01 20.06.01For the section of the deck that cantilevers past the main support beam, they install V flashing which picking up any drips that fall through the deck on the opposite side of the support beam and carries that water across the top of the beam to drip into the gutter.

I should also mention that there is liberal use of silicone sealant and “window tape” to prevent leaks and drips around all the edges. In all reality, probably more than is necessary, because at the perimeter it’s going to be wet from rain anyway.

Panels go up one by one and interlock with each other and are supported at each end, and by the carrier channels. Unlike some systems I looked at before deciding on this one, any ceiling pan can be taken out at any time with a small tool typically used with metal siding that separates it from the panel next to it and from the carrier panels.

In all, there was a little over 500 square feet of underdeck installed. Two workers experienced with metal siding and flashing, but who had not installed this system before, completed the job in 4 days. Most of that time was spent in getting the perimeter trim up and doing some furring and flashing work where I have a combination of brick and siding.

My going cost is... depends

I charge $500.00 per door times number of door panels fixed or swinging, Plus the cost of prehung doors. Fiberglass (Home Depot) is the best investment. Wood just rots out, metal gets beat up and rusts. Opening up wall, installing header (if it is feasible with your existing wall structure, i.e. no heavy loads above that need steel or huge beams) starts at $800.00 for each opening width increments of 24" - 30". Plus extras, however many and what kind of utilities are routed through the existing wall now. Stucco and siding are the same price. Rock, brick, stone and the like extra. Includes matching stucco/siding/trim pattern and paint color to make it look like it was planned from the beginning of new construction

  • Avatar Bill2006 Anyone have experience with Blum Tandem undermount drawer slides?
Nov 25, 2009 by Bill2006 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I'm a home woodworker with what I would call intermediate level skills. I have here in front of me a set of Blum Tandem undermount drawer slides. #562H533-02B I'm drawing up plans for the drawer, which will be a full …th side thickness = 5/8". The Blum literature says if you have 3/4" drawer sides you ought to buy the #563F533. What will go wrong if I make my sides 3/4" and use the 562H533?

    Thanks in advance,

    • Hello -
I've been asking all of those questions myself for quite some time. Just last weekend I knocked together some dovetailed boxes and installed my first set of runners which demystified the process a great d … the drawer front flush w/ the faceframe. I've noticed that my boxes sit just a bit shy of the FF front when using the 3/8" that Blum recommends so I'm tinkering w/the setback anyway.

      Hope that helps!

  • Avatar holy_dart How do I install drawer sliders?
Jul 07, 2010 by holy_dart | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)

I ordered a computer desk that came with drawers, but the drawer sliders is of a type I haven't worked with before.
I believe they are side-mount ball bearing slides. They lack a wheel and sort of overlap when slid in.

    • I guess your computer desk is a knock down furniture.
Refer to the installation details/instructions. It should be somewhere around.
If you can't find the assembly manual contact the retailer, they should be able to help.

Im making something in shop class that has the sides slide out, kind of like a drawer.
I was thinking i would just use these (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31iFQE1F6EL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)
but was told that you need to install those on the walls and cant be installed on the floor.
is there anything that you can install on the floor/would these actually work for both?
