Metal Siding Contractors

Roofing, Siding, & Sheet Metal Contractors

Industrial Siding

Excerpt from Roofing, Siding, & Sheet Metal Contractors Report

Companies in this industry install and repair roofing, siding, and gutters for homes and businesses. Major US companies include CentiMark, D C Taylor, and Tecta America.

Competitive Landscape

Demand for roofing services is closely tied to maintenance needs and new construction. Profitability depends on efficient operations. Large companies have advantages in being able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to serve customers with multiple locations. Companies compete based mainly on price. Most companies in the industry are small.

Products, Operations & Technology

Commercial roofing jobs account for the majority of industry revenue. Revenue from reroofing, repair, and maintenance accounts for 65 percent, while 35 percent is from new construction. The average useful life of a commercial roof is about seven years. Reroofing, maintenance, and repairs are often more profitable than new construction, as companies often negotiate these contracts rather than soliciting bids from several competitors. Roof repair involves simple tasks like caulking, fixing leaks, and re-coating. Roof restorations are bigger jobs, involving resurfacing and major repairs. Reroofing costs twice as much as restoring, and involves replacing all major materials.

Cover the house with tar paper and wire

Add metal trim/flashing everywhere you need a finished edge. Then tar paper or liner. Then stucco wire (chicken wire). Then there is a bunch of custom stucco hardware. Then an initial coat of stucco (scratch coat), then the final coat. I've worked on older houses where the stucco is applied over a sort of insulating board. You may have to remove some, or all of the siding depending.
You can get stucco with color mixed in. If you're going to be happy with the same color forever, that is the maintenance free way. Hit the phone book. Contractors do this stuff all the time. I'd guess $5

Have you forgotten the rule of tool lending?

"Yes you can borrow it once. If you need it again, you have to buy one."
Anyone who borrows one of my tools and returns it with any problems can no longer borrow tools. They can't say you are being cheap when they are the ones unwilling to buy tools.
Craftsmanship is not necessarily on the decline--problem is jobs are bid (and contractors chosen) based on price, not quality. You just have to keep showing your clients why it's worth paying a bit more to get your work.
When working in western New York we did the best vinyl siding around with custom sheet metal bending for wraps, molding, etc
