Vinyl Siding in Charlotte NC: Benefits Beyond the Cheap Price

When it comes to exterior cladding for homes in Charlotte NC, vinyl is usually one of the materials that take the headlines. Although there are other materials like cedar, fiber-cement, and hand-split shake, vinyl siding has become a pertinent choice mostly because of its cheap price tag and various benefits.

According to Homes.Yahoo.com contributor Mark Feirer, “vinyl has captured 32 percent of the U.S. siding market for new homes, with no end in sight to its growing popularity.”
Feirer writes:

A mid-grade vinyl costs about $1.60 per square foot to install, not including the necessary trim pieces, while the installed price of mid-grade cedar clapboard, exclusive of trim and paint, is about 2.5 times higher. (Some premium vinyls cost about the same as the best grade of cedar, but the installed cost is still lower because it goes up faster and doesn’t need painting.)

For many people, price isn’t the issue at all; the real seduction
of plastic siding is reduced maintenance.

Unlike wood or aluminum, vinyl is dyed through and through so it doesn’t fade or change color when scratched or cracked. This cuts off the need for repainting, which would be an inconvenience for a lot of people who’d rather spend their time doing something else. A washing at least once a year is all you have to do to keep the siding spic-and-span all year round.

Other than being low maintenance, vinyl can provide homes with a good moisture barrier. It also doesn’t attract termites and other insects. Moreover, it contains fire resistant additives. Despite not being entirely fireproof, its components prevent it from igniting quickly.

Vinyl sidings from companies such as Carolinas Home Pros are also well-insulated. Through the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, the cladding is given a boost in its R-value, slowing down and resisting heat flow and helping sustain a comfortable temperature indoors. This means that vinyl siding in Charlotte NC homes can help reduce heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

Cedar plywood siding scraps for comparison

I am trying to replicate some redwood T-114 siding (no longer in production).
I need a sample cutoff end from someone that is using this siding to compare it with the siding on my house. I realize I'll have to stain to match. My old siding is rough sawn. I think this would be easier than trying to take my house to the lumber yard, and cheaper than trying to wrestle a 4X8 sheet of $75 plywood in my car. Thanks, Gary Ware
